Two Dogs, A Television was Fields of Industry’s first true band effort, and long overdue. The sound here documents what Eric, Joel, Tristan, Graham and I were up to around summer 2006 when it was recorded in Ann Arbor. We’d been playing lots of shows that sounded just like this, warm and relaxed. We performed sitting down. Some of these songs were salvaged from earlier self-releases and abandoned projects, but I think they came together quite well. Cerberus Records picked this up to release digitally, and we created Arts vs Entertainment, which produced and released the physical CD. Life prevented the album from coming out until 2008, and by then the lineup and sound of the band had changed a little, but this recording is still a foundation of what we continue to do.

I recorded these 3 songs in the summer of 2005 while Mary Jane and I were living in the country and having lots of fun with our dogs. So, naturally, the songs are all about dogs. Eric played guitar on “Ramona Bopper.” This was during the same time that Eric and I recorded songs for a project called The Others Album, which we never finished. I assembled about 50 of the Dogs EP with black and white sticker labels on a white cardboard sleeve. The white CD-Rs were labeled with a custom made stamp. We sold them at the Bizarre Bazaar in Grand Rapids that year and at shows from them on while Eric and I performed as an electric guitar duo.

This was self-recorded through 2002 and 2003 in Jackson and Ann Arbor, partly on my Tascam 424, but mostly on Joel Schrauben’s computer while we roomed together. This was my first stab at an intentional full-length recording. I had the help of a few friends to get some of the instruments I wanted but couldn’t play myself. Joshua Cooper played piano and did some beautiful arranging on “Gray.” Nick Robinson provided alto sax on “No Relief” and Dan Mullkoff trombone on “The Coming Host.” I also had help from Joel, Tristan and Graham, all of whom would later join the band. Mary Jane and I assembled the discs ourselves; I used the shrink wrapper at her job to seal them up. We took about 50 copies with us to Cornerstone that year and I printed them as needed for shows afterward.
